So, grab your sunscreen and your favourite swimsuit, and let’s get started on your journey to becoming a bikini model!

What is a bikini model?

A bikini model is a type of model who primarily focuses on promoting swimwear, lingerie, and other types of clothing that show off the body. These models typically have a toned and athletic physique, as well as an attractive appearance that can appeal to a wide range of consumers.

Why become a bikini model?

Models may want to become a bikini model for several reasons. One of the main reasons is the potential for high-paying model jobs, as well as the opportunity to work with top brands and designers in the fashion industry. Additionally, many models enjoy the challenge of maintaining a fit and healthy physique, as well as the opportunity to travel and experience new places and cultures. Some models may also see becoming a bikini model as a way to boost their career and gain exposure in the model industry.

What are the requirements for being a bikini model?

Becoming a bikini model requires more than just a pretty face and a stereotypical gorgeous figure, as defined by your country’s definition of ‘beauty.’ There are certain height and body type requirements that you should be aware of, as well as fitness and health requirements that you’ll need to meet to be successful in this category of model work.

Height and weight.

When it comes to height and body type, the requirements can vary depending on the brand or designer you are working with. Generally, most bikini models are between 5’7″ to 6’0″ tall and have a toned, athletic body type. However, some brands may prefer a curvier figure, stereotypically for models who would be defined as ‘petite’ aka 5”4 – 5”7 in height, while other clients and brands may prefer a more slender physique.

Fitness and health.

Maintaining a fit and healthy physique is crucial for bikini models. You’ll need to have a regular workout routine that includes cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Eating a balanced diet that is high in protein and nutrient-rich foods will also help you maintain your energy levels and keep your body in top condition. I always encourage my model students to prioritise their health and well-being above all else (and NOT to resort to extreme dieting or over-exercising to fit a certain body type).

Skin and hair.

Similarly to the health requirements mentioned above, as a bikini model, you’ll need to take care of your skin and overall appearance. This means wearing sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays (not doing this properly can expose you to the possibility of developing skin cancer and ageing prematurely). Another way to maintain your skin, nails and hair is by keeping yourself hydrated to maintain a radiant complexion.

Preparing yourself to become a Bikini Model

Confidence and self esteem

Becoming a bikini model requires more than just physical fitness and a good body. Confidence and self-esteem are crucial components of a successful model career. Here are some tips to help you build your confidence and self-esteem:

  1. Practise positive self-talk: The way you talk to yourself can have a significant impact on your confidence and self-esteem. Practise positive self-talk by focusing on your strengths, achievements, and unique qualities. Avoid negative self-talk and self-criticism.
  1. Surround yourself with supportive people: Surround yourself with people who encourage and support you. Avoid negative people who bring you down and make you doubt yourself. Spend time with people who make you feel good about yourself and who motivate you to reach your goals.
  2. Embrace your unique qualities: Embrace your unique qualities and celebrate what makes you different. Instead of trying to fit into a mould or comparing yourself to others, focus on your strengths and what makes you stand out.
  3. Practice self-care: Taking care of yourself is essential for building confidence and self-esteem. Practice self-care by getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly. Take time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as reading, meditating, or spending time in nature.
  4. Challenge yourself: Challenging yourself can help you build confidence and self-esteem. Set small goals and work towards achieving them. Each accomplishment will boost your confidence and motivate you to take on more significant challenges.
  5. Accept constructive criticism: Constructive criticism can help you improve and grow as a bikini model. Instead of taking criticism personally, use it as an opportunity to learn and improve your skills.

Your ‘Bikini Model’ workout routine

Developing a workout routine is essential for achieving your goals as a bikini model. Here are some tips to help you develop an effective workout routine:

  1. Cardio: Cardiovascular exercise is essential for burning fat and toning your body. Incorporate at least 30 minutes of cardio into your workout routine, such as running, cycling, or swimming.
  1. Strength training: Strength training is crucial for building muscle and toning your body. Incorporate exercises that target all major muscle groups, such as squats, lunges, push-ups, and planks. Aim to strength train at least two to three times a week.
  1. Core exercises: A strong core is essential for maintaining good posture and balance. Incorporate exercises that target your abs and lower back, such as crunches, Russian twists, and Superman poses.
  1. Stretching: Stretching is essential for preventing injury and improving flexibility. Incorporate stretches into your workout routine to improve your range of motion and reduce muscle soreness.
  1. Consistency: Consistency is key to achieving your fitness goals. Create a workout schedule that works for you and stick to it. Aim to work out at least three to four times a week for optimal results.

Bikini modelling and your relationship with food

I always prefer using the term ‘lifestyle’ vs using the word ‘diet’ when it comes to talking about nutrition and the model industry. This is because the word ‘diet’, for me, comes with obvious negative connotations and I most certainly don’t want to be recommending extreme diets or unhealthy food practices.

Your relationship with food is definitely something that needs to be addressed prior to entering the model industry, especially if you want to pursue bikini or lingerie modelling. There’s nowhere to hide with how little you’ll be wearing!

Maintaining a healthy diet is just as important as exercising when it comes to achieving your goals as a bikini model. Here are some tips to help you maintain a healthy diet for an optimal lean physique:

  1. Eat nutrient-dense foods: Choose foods that are high in nutrients and low in calories, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Carbs are good for you in moderation, don’t forget to eat them too!
  1. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and keep your body functioning at its best. Drinking 1.5L of water per day is necessary JUST for your organs to function. More on that here (including some delicious water recipes)
  2. Avoid processed foods: Processed foods are often high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, and can lead to weight gain and poor health. Avoid processed foods and opt for whole, natural foods instead.
  1. Practice portion control: Eating too much, even of all the healthy foods, can lead to weight gain. Fluctuating by a couple of kilograms throughout your cycle is perfectly normal. If you feel the need to undo unhealthy practices that you developed in your childhood, you can practise portion control by using smaller plates, measuring your food, and paying attention to your body’s hunger and fullness signals.
  2. Plan your meals: Planning your meals ahead of time can help you stay on track with your healthy eating goals. Prepare healthy meals and snacks in advance to avoid making impulsive, unhealthy (and expensive) food choices. This also helps with your budgeting, so you’re not overspending on things that you could save or invest in something else.

Finding opportunities to become a bikini model

Apply to model agencies.

Applying to model agencies is an essential step in becoming a successful bikini model. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Industry connections: Model agencies have established connections with industry professionals such as photographers, casting directors, designers and clients (aka people who run businesses that require and hire models). By signing with an agency, you gain access to these connections, which can lead to more opportunities and exposure.
  1. Professional guidance: Model agencies provide professional guidance and support to help you develop your model career. They can offer advice on your portfolio, casting calls, and industry standards, and help you navigate the model industry.
  1. Exposure to clients: Model agencies work to promote their models and showcase their portfolios to clients. By signing with an agency, you increase your chances of being seen by clients who are looking for bikini models.
  2. Negotiation and contracts: Model agencies are experts in contract negotiation and can help you navigate the legal aspects of the model industry. They can help you understand your rights, negotiate your compensation, and ensure that you are treated fairly by clients.
  3. Protection: Model agencies help protect their models from scams and exploitation. By signing with a reputable agency, you can ensure that you are working with legitimate clients and that your rights and interests are protected.

Model castings, auditions and networking with professionals.

Attending casting calls and auditions is a vital step in establishing yourself as and becoming a successful bikini model. Here’s why:

  1. Exposure to clients: Casting calls and auditions are opportunities to showcase your model skills and potential to clients. By attending these events, you have the chance to be seen by designers, photographers, and other industry professionals who may be looking for bikini models.
  1. Industry experience: Attending casting calls and auditions can provide valuable industry experience and help you develop your model skills. You’ll have the chance to receive feedback from professionals, practise your walk and poses, and gain a better understanding of the industry.
  1. Networking: Casting calls and auditions provide opportunities to network with other models, industry professionals, and potentially even clients. Networking can lead to future collaborations, job opportunities, and valuable connections.
  2. Practice and preparation: Attending casting calls and auditions can help you gain experience and confidence in your model abilities. The more castings you attend, the more prepared you will be for future opportunities.

Create your own brand and online portfolio.

With nearly 20 years of business consulting experience and my base qualifications around graphic design, marketing, communications and social media strategy…branding is SO MY THING! Check out my About page to see why.

Creating a brand for yourself as a bikini model is crucial for establishing a successful and thriving career in this category. To create a brand, start by defining your unique selling points (USPs) and identifying your target audience. Your USPs could be your personality, physical attributes, or model style, while your target audience could be fashion brands, photographers, or model agencies. Once you have defined your USPs and target audience, create a brand image that reflects your values and goals as a bikini model. This could include your brand name, logo, and brand messaging.

Building an online portfolio is essential for showcasing your model abilities and establishing a strong online presence. Your social media should be treated more like a calling card, or a taste, for WHO you are.

Start by creating a website that showcases your best photos and model work. Include a biography, your model experience, and your contact information to make it easy for potential clients or collaborators to reach you. To make your portfolio stand out, consider investing in professional photography, creating a cohesive and visually appealing layout, and regularly updating your portfolio with your latest work.

Pink Highlight: Consider reaching out to fashion bloggers or influencers to collaborate and feature your work on their platforms, as this can help increase your online visibility and reach a wider audience.

My final tips for striving for success as a bikini model

Pursuing a career as a bikini model requires dedication, hard work, and perseverance. While it can be a challenging and competitive industry, with the right mindset and approach, you can turn your dreams into a reality.

Remember to focus on your goals, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and continuously work on improving your model skills. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and don’t be afraid to take risks and put yourself out there. With the right mindset, determination, and effort, you can achieve your dreams and become a successful bikini model.

I wish you the success you work for and deserve!
